Arthritis of the glenohumeral joint, the ball-and-socket joint of the shoulder, causes pain, stiffness, and loss of function that can profoundly affect quality of life. Although less common than hip or knee arthritis, shoulder arthritis can be just as debilitating. What is Shoulder Arthritis?
The glenohumeral joint is lined with articular cartilage, which allows smooth, pain-free movement. Arthritis involves the progressive breakdown of this cartilage, eventually leading to bone rubbing on bone. The most common form is osteoarthritis, occurring as a result of wear and tear. Other forms include post-traumatic arthritis (following previous injury) and rheumatoid arthritis.
Diagnosis
X-rays are the primary imaging investigation, demonstrating narrowing of the joint space, bone spurs (osteophytes), and other arthritic changes.
Symptoms
Deep aching pain within the shoulder joint
Stiffness and reduced range of movement
Grinding or crunching sensation (crepitus)
Pain that worsens with activity and may disturb sleep
Progressive difficulty with everyday tasks
Treatment Options
Non-Surgical Treatment
Physiotherapy and activity modification
Anti-inflammatory medication
Intra-articular corticosteroid injection, to reduce pain and inflammation
Surgical Treatment: Shoulder Replacement (Arthroplasty)
When shoulder arthritis is severe and non-surgical treatment no longer provides adequate relief, shoulder replacement surgery offers excellent outcomes.
Shoulder replacement surgery is a well-established procedure with high patient satisfaction rates.
Recovery
Recovery from shoulder replacement typically involves a period of immobilisation in a sling, followed by a carefully supervised physiotherapy programme.
Most patients experience significant improvement in pain and function within three to six months, with continued improvement over the following year.
