Elbow Arthritis

Arthritis of the elbow is less common than in the hip or knee, but can cause significant pain, stiffness, and restriction of movement that affects daily function. Mr Adam offers a range of treatments, tailored to the severity of the condition and the patient's individual needs.

What is Elbow Arthritis?

The elbow joint is lined with smooth articular cartilage that allows pain-free movement. Arthritis involves the breakdown of this cartilage. The most common forms affecting the elbow include:

•   Osteoarthritis, wear-and-tear arthritis, more common in those with a history of manual work, heavy loading, or previous elbow injury

•   Post-traumatic arthritis, developing after a previous fracture or dislocation of the elbow

•   Rheumatoid arthritis, an inflammatory arthritis that frequently affects the elbow

Diagnosis

X-rays demonstrate the degree of arthritic change. CT scanning may provide additional detail about the bony anatomy.

Symptoms

  • Pain within the elbow joint, particularly with activity

  • Stiffness, often loss of full straightening (extension) and bending (flexion)

  • Locking or catching within the joint (sometimes caused by loose bodies)

  • Swelling

  • In advanced cases, significant functional limitation

Treatment Options

Non-Surgical Treatment

Activity modification and physiotherapy

Anti-inflammatory medication

Intra-articular corticosteroid injection

Surgical Treatment:

Surgical options include debridement and joint replacement surgery, tailored to the patient’s symptoms, degree of arthritis and level of function.
